For a client from Seoul, a residence where past and present merge—
balancing a transition into “adulting” with room for cultural roots to grow.
Our client, born and raised in South Korea, had just turned 30 and needed a new place
to mark this new transition in life. The home is surrounded by a bamboo grove and has
sweeping views of San Francisco, where the client watched storms form over the bay,
falling in love with the colors. We brought these moody blues and grays inside,
softening them with a series of Agnes Martin vellum lithographs, our sheep wool
tapestry, and a mossy green Bellini sofa.
The client’s family had an extensive collection of blue-chip artists, but we emphasized
emerging and local names—Jesse Schlesinger, Linda Fahey, JG Switzer—to connect
the residence with its cultural history and surroundings.
