S A M E   B L U E   A S   T H E   S K Y was a month-long exhibition that brought together the work of eleven historical and contemporary artists from Northern California. Working across a range of mediums – sculpture, photography, painting – these artists continue a tradition in which aesthetics, innovation, and place are seen as inextricable.

The art of Northern California is informed by the natural and cultural landscapes of the region: a juxtaposition of natural and urban, new and old, utopian and traditional; while the coastline is a reminder of life always on the edge: not as periphery but as frontier. Northern California's position away from the historic centers of the art world has allowed its artists the freedom to dream and live on their own terms.

S T U D I O  A H E A D in celebration of receiving the New American Voices award from Architectural Digest, given annually to the top emerging interior design firms in the US, conceived of this exhibition to give thanks to the artists who inspire the studio. Founders Homan Rajai and Elena Dendiberia asked Mariah Nielson, Director of the JB Blunk Estate, to help co-curate a show that would represent Northern California's unique cultural heritage. The pieces in this exhibition form a narrative around the artists who draw from and are in turn informed by Northern California's landscapes. In this transfer of creative energy, this region's long tradition of creative innovation and environmental synergy is continued.

M A R I A H N I E L S O N is a curator and Director of the JB Blunk Estate and Blunk Space.
